Over the weekend, what was supposed to be a fun-filled picnic at the TMEC Recreation Centre in Papar, Sabah, almost turned tragic when a teenage boy was swept away by strong currents while swimming. The 18-year-old, identified as Muhamad Haiqal Irwan, found himself in distress in the water, prompting a quick response from the public to rescue him.

The incident caught the attention of the Kimanis Fire and Rescue Services station, whose team of seven men sprang into action upon receiving a distress call at 11.38am. Rushing to the scene, located 18 kilometres away from their station, the team arrived at 12.02pm to find the victim unconscious.

Station chief Johainin Ruslam reported that the team wasted no time in providing emergency cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to the teenager. Despite his initial state, Haiqal Irwan responded positively to the medical assistance and was later transferred to the Papar district hospital for further treatment.

The rescue operation concluded at 1.30pm after ensuring that there were no additional hazards present at the scene. The timely and effective response from both the public and the rescue team played a crucial role in saving the teenager from a potentially tragic outcome.
