After an extensive search, her human remains were finally discovered on Sunday by the police in Katoomba, 23 years after she informed hostel staff that she was going for a walk and never returned.

Kellie Ann Carmichael, originally from Geelong, Victoria, was never seen again, with all her belongings left behind at the backpacking hostel.

NSW Police issued a statement confirming the discovery, stating, “During an unrelated police operation on Tuesday 30 April 2024, officers attached to Blue Mountains Police Area Command located human remains in bushland near Katoomba.

Following inquiries, police returned to the same location on Monday 27 May 2024, where they discovered additional remains.

The human remains that were initially found and seized have now been positively identified as those of missing person Kellie Ann Carmichael, and her family has been informed.”

Police officers reportedly spotted the remains while abseiling down a cliff in the area.

The investigation has now been handed over to the Unsolved Homicide Team, who are in the process of gathering evidence for the coroner’s examination.

Authorities hope that the cause of Carmichael’s death can be determined through analysis of her bones, shedding more light on this tragic case.

The Carmichael family has long suspected foul play in their daughter’s disappearance.

Parents John and Margaret reported Kellie Ann missing when they became concerned after not hearing from her for nearly a week.

Upon contacting the hostel, they were informed that she had checked out on April 29.

Staff confirmed that her ID, wallet, phone, camera, toiletries, and cards were all left in her room.

Margaret expressed her grief to the media, saying, “I feel like we’ve been robbed of having our daughter. Our life is never going to be the same.”

Various theories emerged regarding the circumstances of the 24-year-old’s disappearance, with some speculating that a serial killer may have been involved in her case.

Initially, police considered the possibility that Carmichael may have taken her own life, as she had a history of schizophrenia.

After media attention escalated, the Homicide Squad took charge of the investigation, and extensive search efforts were conducted in the Blue Mountains area.

After eight years of searching, a 2009 inquest led by Deputy Coroner Carl Milovanovich declared Kellie Ann Carmichael deceased, but crucial details about her death remained unknown.

Police Minister Michael Daley made a public plea for information, stating, “Please give her family the closure that they deserve. Please come forward with information.

And understand that if you have been responsible for doing harm to Kellie Ann, the police will never close this file.

They will hunt you until the day you die.”

A reward of £160,000 was offered for any information related to the cold case, as the investigation continued.

This development comes amid progress in another long-standing mystery involving the murder of three Britons in the French Alps in 2012, where breakthroughs in DNA testing may soon provide answers.

Efforts to solve decade-old cases, like the one in France, demonstrate the importance of advancements in forensic technology in bringing closure to families and justice to victims.
