On May 28, Jeronimo A. Duran was arrested and booked into the Broward County Jail on charges of murder and child abuse. According to online court records, he is being held with no bond and has pleaded not guilty.

The arrest came after authorities responded to a home where they found a 2-year-old girl bleeding profusely from her neck. Despite efforts to save her, the young girl was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

An arrest report revealed that Duran had picked up his daughter from his ex-girlfriend’s house that morning and brought her to the home he shared with his grandmother. When his grandmother returned home, she discovered Duran lying on top of the girl in the kitchen, with both of them facing each other.

Allegedly, Duran’s grandmother saw that the girl was in distress and called 911. Authorities found a stainless blade black handle steak knife with blood on it at the scene, along with a significant amount of blood on the kitchen floor.

During questioning, Duran admitted to suffering from mental illness and revealed that he had stopped taking his antidepressant medication and had been smoking marijuana. He confessed to choking his daughter until she was unconscious and then slashing her throat with a kitchen knife.

The mother of Duran’s daughter had previously raised concerns about his mental state and alleged violent behavior. Court documents indicated that the mother had warned of Duran’s erratic and dangerous tendencies, leading to a custody dispute.

In a statement, Duran’s attorney, David A. Frankel, acknowledged his client’s long-standing struggle with severe mental illness. He described the situation as tragic and complex, highlighting the challenges of dealing with mental health issues.
