Accident – Death – Obituary News : An 8-year-old boy was the victim of a drive-by shooting over the weekend in Colleton County, South Carolina, and received life-saving care from first responders in the middle of a highway, officials reported on Monday.

The incident unfolded when the Colleton County Fire and Rescue team received a distress call just after 11 p.m. on Saturday regarding a child with a gunshot wound in the 100 block of London Lane north of Walterboro. As emergency personnel rushed to the scene, a deputy encountered a speeding car heading towards Walterboro. Simultaneously, a rescue unit was en route on Jefferies Highway or US Highway 15, and the car flagged down the deputy near Southland Apartments.

According to rescue officials, the child was in cardiac arrest when the sergeant from the sheriff’s office arrived on the scene. The sergeant, along with the Battalion Chief, immediately administered CPR and advanced life support measures. Additional responders joined in the efforts to resuscitate the child, who eventually regained a heartbeat and began breathing on his own.

Due to the unavailability of a medical helicopter in the county, the boy was transported by ambulance to Colleton Medical Center, where he was stabilized by firefighter-paramedics. Subsequently, he was airlifted to the Shawn Jenkins Children’s Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston in critical condition.

The current status of the child remains undisclosed, and the Sheriff’s Office is conducting an investigation into the shooting. Anyone with information related to the incident is urged to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 843-549-2211.

In a separate development, a man was shot and killed in a deputy-involved shooting following a car crash early Sunday morning in Spartanburg County. The incident commenced around 4 a.m. on I-85 northbound near mile marker 71, where a single-car crash led to the closure of several lanes of traffic. The driver of the car fled the scene and was later located by law enforcement officials.

The man, identified as 25-year-old Nicholas Parella, informed officials of the presence of a gun and failed to comply with verbal commands, reaching for an object in his waistband. Subsequently, deputies fired their weapons, resulting in Parella’s death. No deputies sustained injuries during the encounter.

Additionally, an Upstate man accused of killing a woman died while in custody. Michael Clarkson, 39, was found in critical condition in his cell and succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. Clarkson was implicated in the murder of 40-year-old Colleen D’Ortona in Travelers Rest, leading to his arrest.

On a more general note, Ford has issued a recall for over 100,000 Lincoln Aviator cars due to concerns regarding the rearview camera. The malfunction, attributed to the Accessory Protocol Image Module (APIM), may result in distorted images or flickering due to phone interference. Tesla has also recalled more than 125,000 vehicles in the US owing to a malfunction in the seatbelt warning system, which could pose a risk during a crash.

In a cautionary reminder, experts highlighted the dangers of leaving children unattended in hot cars, as the interior temperature can quickly rise to potentially fatal levels. To prevent tragedies, caregivers are advised to never leave children alone in vehicles and keep car keys out of reach to avoid accidental entrapment.

This string of incidents underscores the importance of vigilance and prompt action in emergency situations, as well as the necessity for ongoing safety measures to protect vulnerable individuals..
