Authorities in the Virgin Islands have determined that a father acted in self-defense when he shot his son in the Sion Hill area on St. Croix. The incident took place on Thursday afternoon, according to the V.I. Police Department.

The 911 Emergency Call Center received a report at approximately 12:29 p.m. that a man had shot his son in the abdomen. Detectives investigating the case were informed that the father, who remains unnamed, was attacked by his son, identified as 44-year-old James Knowles. Knowles was reportedly armed with a machete during the altercation.

Fortunately, a witness intervened and stopped the attack before Knowles returned with a reciprocating saw, posing a further threat to his father. In response to the imminent danger, the father drew his firearm and discharged three shots at Knowles.

Following the shooting, Knowles was rushed to Luis Hospital for emergency surgery. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries and passed away as a result of the incident.

Man Arrested for Kidnapping and False Imprisonment

In a separate incident, a man identified as Vernon Sackey Jr. has been taken into custody by the Virgin Islands Police Department on charges of kidnapping and false imprisonment. The arrest came after a distress call was made to 911 by a woman who reported being held against her will by Sackey.

According to police reports, the woman was in Sackey’s car when she called for help. She explained to authorities that Sackey had threatened her life and refused to allow her to leave the vehicle. However, she managed to escape when officers arrived at the scene.

Sackey was apprehended by VIPD on Thursday and has been detained at the John A. Bell Adult Correctional Facility pending further legal proceedings. He is facing multiple charges, including kidnapping (domestic violence), false imprisonment, simple assault and battery.

It is worth noting that Sackey has a history of domestic violence-related arrests, with previous incidents reported in August 2022. In one instance, he violated a restraining order by breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s home and engaging in a physical altercation with her friend. Additionally, Sackey has previously been convicted for possession of ammunition.
