An elderly man from Royal has been arrested on multiple felony charges after a disturbing incident involving his wife. Gary Vernon Fuller, aged 80, was taken into custody on Wednesday afternoon following a reported attack on his wife that led to a tense standoff.

Fuller, a convicted felon, was charged with second-degree domestic battery, possession of a firearm by certain persons, aggravated assault on a family or household member, and first-degree terroristic threatening. These charges carry severe penalties, with each offence punishable by several years in prison.

Following his arrest, Fuller appeared in Garland County District Court, where he was held on zero bond pending a felony review hearing scheduled for June 21. Despite having no local criminal history, court records indicate that Fuller has a prior felony conviction in Texas.

Details of the Incident

The incident unfolded on Wednesday afternoon when Garland County sheriff’s deputies responded to a call about a physical dispute at the Arrowpoint residence. Upon arriving at the scene, Deputy Alex Finney was informed that Fuller’s wife, aged 68, had locked herself in the bathroom while Fuller allegedly attempted to break in.

Finney heard the woman’s screams from inside the house and quickly intervened. He found Fuller aggressively trying to access the bathroom where his wife was hiding. Despite repeated commands to back away, Fuller refused to comply, prompting Finney to take him into custody.

During the arrest, Finney discovered a loaded Smith and Wesson .38 revolver in Fuller’s possession. The weapon was safely secured, and Fuller was restrained as his wife was freed from the bathroom.

Victim’s Account

Upon questioning, the victim recounted a harrowing ordeal in which Fuller allegedly prevented her from leaving the residence and physically attacked her. She described being struck in the back and threatened with a firearm by her husband, prompting her to seek refuge in the bathroom.

The victim displayed signs of physical injury, including bruising on her face and complaints of back pain. The authorities carefully documented her account of the events and ensured her safety following the incident.

As the legal proceedings unfold, Fuller remains in custody awaiting his next court appearance. The case serves as a stark reminder of the serious consequences of domestic violence and the importance of swift intervention in such situations.
