His team of researchers, archaeologists, and divers focused their efforts on Lake Erie, with the organization’s headquarters situated in the vicinity of the lake’s southern shore.
Despite being labelled as “semi-retired” in his role at Cleveland Underwater Explorers, VanZandt remained actively involved in the organization’s projects. Tragically, during his first dive of the year, he encountered a fatal accident while exploring a newly discovered shipwreck. The circumstances surrounding his death have not been disclosed by either the organization or the authorities involved in the recovery of his body.
The United States Coast Guard was alerted to VanZandt’s disappearance on Saturday afternoon, prompting a search operation in Lake Erie, approximately 6 miles off the coast of Cleveland. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources and an Erie County dive team joined the search efforts, but it was divers from Lake County who ultimately located VanZandt’s body.
