An Ohio man tragically lost his life on Saturday while exploring a shipwreck in Lake Erie. The United States Coast Guard initially reported that a 70-year-old man had gone missing in the lake around 4 p.m. on Saturday. The search efforts were concentrated in an area approximately 6 miles off the coast of Cleveland.

Despite the combined efforts of multiple agencies, the man’s body was eventually discovered by local divers. “At 7:45 local time, divers from Lake County recovered a body and confirmed it to be the missing man,” announced the USCG Great Lakes on social media. The man’s body was found near the East 9th Street pier, as confirmed by the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The deceased was identified as Dave VanZandt, who served as the founder, director, and chief archaeologist at Cleveland Underwater Explorers. This organisation specialises in documenting shipwrecks in the Great Lakes region.

According to a statement released by Cleveland Underwater Explorers on social media, VanZandt was on his first dive of the year, exploring a newly discovered shipwreck when he failed to return to the boat and tragically suffered a fatal diving accident. The organisation extended their condolences to his wife and family during this difficult time.

As of now, there is no further information available regarding the circumstances surrounding VanZandt’s untimely death during the dive.
