Authorities in Akron, Ohio are currently investigating a tragic incident that occurred over the weekend at a street party, where one person was killed and 24 others were injured in a shooting. According to Police Chief Brian Harding, it is believed that at least one individual opened fire on the crowd from a vehicle during the early hours of Sunday morning.
Upon arriving at the scene, investigators discovered over 35 shell casings scattered across the block where the shooting took place. It is estimated that more than 100 people were in attendance at the birthday-party gathering, leading to a chaotic and devastating situation. Along with the shell casings, two handguns were also found at the scene, indicating that some party-goers may have retaliated against the vehicle that initiated the shooting.
As of Sunday night, no suspects have been identified in connection to the incident. In an effort to gather more information, the city of Akron has issued a plea for witnesses to come forward. To encourage cooperation, rewards totaling £22,500 have been offered by the Summit County Crime Stoppers, U.S. Marshal’s Service, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
Mayor Shammas Malik expressed shock and concern over the high number of victims, emphasizing that those responsible for the violence will face severe consequences. The deceased victim, a 27-year-old male, has not been publicly identified, while the wounded individuals range in age from 19 to 43, with at least two reported to be in critical condition.
Prior to the shooting, police had responded to noise complaints at the party and attempted to disperse the crowd. Despite their efforts, the party continued and escalated into a violent altercation. Following reports of shots being fired, officers returned to the scene in the early hours of Sunday morning.
