A high-speed chase involving a Wake County deputy and a 19-year-old man ended in tragedy when the suspect crashed into another car in northeast Wake County, just north of Rolesville on Sunday night.

The incident unfolded around 10 p.m. when a Wake County Sheriff’s Office deputy attempted to pull over a driver on Interstate 540 near U.S. 401/Louisburg Road in the north Raleigh area, according to a news release from the Wake County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, deputies tried to stop a driver in a Nissan for speeding at over 100 miles per hour. The driver refused to stop, leading to a high-speed chase north on U.S. 401, with the suspect continuing through the Rolesville area.

Deputies pursued the suspect to the area of U.S. 401/Louisburg Road and N.C. 96/Zebulon Road, where the driver crashed into another car, a Toyota Camry.

The driver of the speeding Nissan, identified as 19-year-old Aidan Gambone from Wake Forest, tragically lost his life in the crash. Troopers confirmed that he was the only person in the vehicle.

The driver of the Camry, who was the sole occupant of that vehicle, was transported to WakeMed with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, according to the highway patrol.

Authorities closed two lanes of U.S. 401 northbound near N.C. 96 following the crash. One lane was reopened around 12:30 a.m. on Monday, with the highway fully cleared by 1:35 a.m., as reported by the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

The crash site is located approximately half a mile from the Wake County-Franklin County line.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is currently investigating the crash, as confirmed by a Wake County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman.

Impact on Traffic

The closure of two lanes on U.S. 401 caused disruption to traffic in the area, with one lane reopening in the early hours of Monday morning. Commuters were advised to seek alternative routes during the closure.
