The incident unfolded when Pittsfield Police responded to a 911 call reporting suspicious activity on South John Street. Upon arrival, officers heard gunshots and discovered Olivieri in her car with fatal injuries. Despite efforts to save her, she was pronounced dead at Berkshire Medical Center. The Chief Medical Examiner later confirmed that the cause of her death was a homicide resulting from a gunshot wound to the head.
During the trial, witnesses testified that Sumner was targeting someone else in the area, indicating that Olivieri was an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire.
