Accident – Death – Obituary News : Florida Highway Patrol officers have apprehended a man on suspicion of driving under the influence following a collision that resulted in the hospitalization of a 1-year-old child and two other individuals in Brevard County.
The incident, which occurred on northbound Interstate 95 near mile marker 190, involved two vehicles—a Lexus ES 350 F Sport and a Toyota Camry. The crash caused significant damage to both vehicles, with the Camry overturning multiple times before coming to rest on its side in the grass median.
According to the FHP arrest report, the Lexus, driven by 25-year-old Thomas Roberts Jr., was travelling at a high rate of speed and failed to slow down as it approached the Camry. The collision occurred when the Lexus’s right front bumper collided with the Camry’s left rear bumper.
Following the crash, the Camry veered off the road, overturned, and ultimately crashed into a traffic sign. The severity of the impact resulted in multiple injuries, with one occupant of the Camry, a 1-year-old child, being airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children. The child was reported to be alert and stable.
Another passenger in the Camry was transported to Holmes Regional Medical as a trauma alert, with injuries including a severe head injury, a broken clavicle, and a broken leg. A third passenger was taken to Viera Hospital for treatment of “soft tissue” injuries.
Upon investigation, officers noted that Roberts exhibited signs of impairment, including bloodshot watery red eyes, a strong smell of alcohol on his breath, and slurred speech. He also appeared anxious and had difficulty explaining the events leading up to the crash.
Roberts was subsequently subjected to field sobriety tests, which he failed. He was arrested for being under the influence of an intoxicant and taken to the hospital for a blood draw before being transported to the Brevard County jail.
Charges against Roberts include DUI causing serious bodily injury to another, three counts of DUI property damage, three counts of DUI causing injury to another person, and reckless driving causing serious bodily injury to another.
