BALASORE: Two elderly individuals tragically passed away from suspected heatstroke in separate incidents in Balasore district while exercising their right to vote on Saturday.

The deceased individuals have been identified as 67-year-old Surendra Mohanty from Iswarpur village in Nilagiri and 79-year-old Birendra Tudu from Nagakhani village in Basta.

Tragic Incidents

In the first incident in Nilagiri, Mohanty and his wife went to Iswarpur primary school to cast their votes. Unfortunately, the polling booth did not have a resting shed, forcing people to queue under the scorching sun before casting their votes.

Tragedy struck around 11 am when Mohanty collapsed while standing in the queue at booth no-159. Despite efforts from locals to revive him by sprinkling water, he remained unresponsive. He was quickly rushed to Nilagiri hospital where medical professionals declared him deceased.

Authorities have taken possession of Mohanty’s body for postmortem examination. While the exact cause of death is still under investigation, police suspect that he may have succumbed to a heatstroke.

Local residents have criticized the district administration for failing to make adequate arrangements in light of the extreme weather conditions. They are calling for compensation to be provided to the families of the deceased in accordance with government regulations.

Similarly, Tudu, a 79-year-old resident of Nagakhani village in Basta, collapsed after exiting the polling booth following his vote. Ward members and concerned citizens rushed him to Rupsa community health centre, where medical professionals confirmed his passing.

Call for Action

These tragic incidents serve as a stark reminder of the importance of ensuring the well-being of all individuals, especially the elderly, during public events such as elections. Authorities are being urged to take proactive measures to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.

As the community mourns the loss of these two individuals, efforts are being made to raise awareness about the dangers of heat-related illnesses and the need for proper infrastructure to protect vulnerable individuals.

May the souls of Surendra Mohanty and Birendra Tudu rest in peace, and may their untimely deaths serve as a catalyst for positive change in the community.
