On June 1, 2024, tragedy struck at Smith Mountain Lake as a 73-year-old man lost his life in a drowning accident. The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office was called to the scene to investigate the unfortunate incident.

It was around 7:40 p.m. when the Franklin County Communications Center received a distressing 9-1-1 call reporting that a person had fallen into the water at Magnum Point Marina in Union Hall. Despite immediate efforts, the individual had not resurfaced by the time of the call, prompting swift action from law enforcement.

Responding to the emergency, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office swiftly deployed a search and rescue operation, leading to the discovery of a body in the water. Tragically, the victim, identified as 73-year-old Stephen Sykes from Littleton, North Carolina, was found lifeless and pronounced dead at the scene.

While initial investigations suggest that the drowning was the result of an accidental fall, authorities are continuing to delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding this heartbreaking event.
