Tragedy struck the city of Akron in the US state of Ohio, as one person was killed and at least 24 others were injured in a mass shooting that took place just after midnight local time. The incident occurred near Kelly Street and 8th Avenue, where officers discovered numerous bullet casings and a gun, as reported by local media.
As of now, no arrests have been made and the suspect remains unidentified. The Akron Police Department has launched an investigation into the shooting, confirming that 25 people were shot, with one fatality. While many of the victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries, some are in a more critical condition.
Mayor Shammas Malik and Police Chief Brian Harding of Akron released a joint statement on social media condemning the act of violence and assuring the community that efforts are being made to apprehend those responsible. “Our city is reeling after the devastation of senseless violence,” they expressed. “With more than two dozen victims, the pain and trauma reverberates across all of Akron today as we search for answers.”
The statement further encouraged individuals with any information regarding the shooting to come forward anonymously. “We need you to speak up in order to prevent further violence and retaliation,” the officials urged. “Our city government and our Akron Police Department will continue to prioritise public safety as our number one concern as we aim to end gun violence in our community.”
