Accident – Death – Obituary News : Silchar: A tragic incident unfolded in Assam as the police arrested a man from Dhemaji district on dowry charges following the alleged suicide of his 19-year-old wife. The husband, identified as Ramesh Gogoi, was taken into custody after a case was registered under section 304-B (dowry death) and other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The young woman, identified as Tolari Koch Gogoi, had been married to Ramesh from Khubalia area in Dhemaji for a few years. According to police reports citing the deceased’s family members, they had previously filed a complaint against Ramesh for eloping with Tolari when she was just 15 years old and forcibly marrying her.
Authorities are also looking into allegations of child marriage against Ramesh. An investigating officer stated, “As of now, he is being accused of promoting dowry and abetment of suicide. However, further investigations are underway, and additional charges may be added if necessary.”
Tolari’s mother claimed that Ramesh subjected her daughter to physical and mental abuse while demanding money. She expressed that her daughter was under immense stress and fear, which ultimately drove her to take her own life.
The police recovered Tolari’s body from Ramesh’s residence on Friday, but he managed to flee the scene. However, he was apprehended by authorities on Saturday afternoon and is set to appear before the court on Sunday. The woman’s body has been sent for postmortem examination.
