Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A 57-year-old man sustained injuries while 25 to 30 individuals were successfully rescued following a fire incident in a 62-storey residential building in south Mumbai’s Byculla area late on Saturday night, officials reported on Sunday.

The fire originated in a flat located on the 10th floor of the A wing of the Monte South building in the Khatao Mill Compound in Byculla at 11.42 pm on Saturday, according to a fire official. The entire floor was engulfed in smoke as the blaze spread rapidly.

Several people found themselves stranded on the upper floors of the building, awaiting rescue efforts, the official informed.

Rescue operations were successfully conducted, with 25 to 30 individuals being safely evacuated through the building’s staircase. Unfortunately, a man named Pandurang Shinde sustained injuries during the incident.

The fire was classified as a “level-2” blaze, primarily affecting the electric wiring and installations, wooden furniture, household articles, wardrobe, mattresses, wooden beds, sofas, curtains, electronic appliances, false ceilings, doors, windows, and modular kitchen of the 10th floor flat. Additionally, damage was reported in the curtains, window glass, and other items in an apartment on the 11th floor.

Emergency response teams swiftly arrived at the scene, with eight water tankers and six fire engines mobilised for firefighting operations. Four hose lines and nine motor pumps were deployed to combat the blaze, which was eventually extinguished by 2.45 am.

During the firefighting process, an explosion occurred in the kitchen of the 10th-floor flat, stemming from a refrigerator compressor malfunction, the official disclosed.

At present, the cause of the fire remains unknown, although initial reports suggest a potential short-circuit in one of the flats on the 10th floor might have sparked the blaze.
