ELKRIDGE, Md. — In a heart-wrenching incident, three family members lost their lives and another is fighting for survival after an apparent murder-suicide in Elkridge, Maryland, on Thursday night.
Residents in the area were alarmed by the sound of gunshots coming from a townhouse, prompting them to call the police, as reported by The Associated Press. The suspect himself called the authorities, confessing to shooting his family members and expressing his intention to take his own life, according to Howard County Police spokesperson Sherry Llewellyn during a press briefing on Friday.
The victims, including the suspect’s wife, daughter, and daughter-in-law, all lived at the townhouse, while the suspect did not reside there, as reported by The AP.
The suspect has been identified as Nayyer Abbas Syed, aged 61, while his wife was named Syeda Aalia, aged 57; his daughter as Syeda Fatima, aged 25; and his daughter-in-law as Alizey Fatima, aged 33. Tragically, all of them were pronounced dead at the scene. Syed’s son, Muhammad Ali Hamza, aged 31, is currently in critical condition in the hospital.
Fortunately, Syed’s three-month-old granddaughter was found unharmed in the home and was placed in the care of a family member following a wellness check by the police.
Howard County Police Department is working closely with the surviving family members to provide support during this difficult time. “This was an isolated incident, a very, very sad one. We’re doing everything we can to work with family members and the surviving son to make sure we’re doing what we can to help them,” Llewellyn expressed, as reported by WBAL.
The motive behind this tragic event remains unknown, Llewellyn stated. “We really don’t know what led up to the incident, but we’re going to do some investigating into cellphone records and text messages to see if we can find more information,” she added, as reported by WBAL.
As the community mourns the loss of three lives, the investigation continues to unravel the circumstances surrounding this devastating incident.
