KOLHAPUR: A 59-year-old prisoner convicted in the 1993 Bombay serial blasts case met a tragic end on Sunday when he was brutally attacked by five fellow inmates at Kalamba Central Jail in Kolhapur. The victim, known as Munna, was mercilessly beaten with concrete and metal covers of a drainage chamber near the prison’s bathing well at 7.55 am.
Swati Sathe, DIG (Prisons), stated that the motive behind the heinous attack is yet to be determined. Initial investigations suggest a long-standing animosity between the attackers and Munna. “There are four other Bombay blasts convicts housed in Kalamba. For their safety, we will segregate them from the regular inmates and consider relocating them to other facilities if necessary,” Sathe mentioned.
Munna had been transferred to Kalamba jail in 2013 after serving his original 14-year sentence. However, the Supreme Court extended his punishment to a life term in 2007. Munna’s involvement in escorting prime accused Tiger Memon from Mumbai to Raigad for the transportation of RDX and weapons before the deadly blasts on March 12, 1993, resulted in the loss of over 250 lives and left more than 1,400 individuals injured. Munna also played a role in transporting the cache to Mumbai, then known as Bombay.
The perpetrators of the attack on Munna have been identified as Bablu, Pratik, Ruturaj, Sourabh Vikas Sidh, and Dipak Netaji Khot. They are facing multiple charges, including those under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA). On the fateful Sunday morning, Munna was bathing at the well when the five assailants assaulted him. A prison worker who attempted to intervene was also attacked, according to officials.
