Kelli Ann Carmichael, a 24-year-old woman from Geelong, who went missing in April 2001, has finally been found after 23 years. The human remains discovered in the Blue Mountains near Katoomba have been confirmed to be those of the missing backpacker.
Carmichael was last seen by hostel staff in Katoomba, west of Sydney, before disappearing without a trace. Her family has been notified of the discovery and is receiving the necessary support during this difficult time.
After an unrelated police operation in April 2024, human remains were discovered in bushland near Katoomba. Following further investigations, more remains were found at the same location on May 27, which have now been confirmed to be Carmichael’s.
The NSW Police Unsolved Homicide Team is currently conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Carmichael’s disappearance and death. A brief of evidence will be prepared for the coroner as part of the ongoing inquiry.
