Panaji: Cyber criminals in Goa have found a new way to carry out their illicit activities by using unsecured Wi-Fi connections from neighbourhoods or public spots. This alarming trend was brought to light when a 20-year-old boy from an economically disadvantaged family in a remote area of Canacona used his neighbour’s Wi-Fi to commit a cybercrime.

The accused, identified as Vinay Gaonkar, resides in Nanem, Gaodongrem in Canacona and is currently studying at an ITI. According to PI (cybercrime) Deepak Pednekar, Gaonkar used his neighbour’s unsecured Wi-Fi to contact a woman online and shared objectionable pictures and videos.

A nurse filed a police complaint against Gaonkar at the cybercrime police station after he bombarded her with obscene material on social media in exchange for sexual favours. The quick action taken by the nurse led to the arrest of the accused.

During the investigation, it was discovered that Gaonkar used a search engine to commit the offence, indicating his lack of expertise in online activities. Pednekar stressed the importance of securing Wi-Fi connections with strong passwords to prevent misuse by cyber criminals.

SP (cybercrime) Rahul Gupta highlighted that Gaonkar’s modus operandi involved creating fake Instagram accounts to contact unsuspecting users and solicit explicit content. The cybercrime police station team managed to apprehend the accused after an extensive search in Canacona.

The investigation also revealed that Gaonkar had a history of using fake identities to engage in inappropriate online behaviour. Gupta advised the public to exercise caution when interacting with unknown individuals on social media platforms and to verify the authenticity of accounts before engaging in any communication.

The recovered evidence, including chat logs and videos, will undergo cyber forensics examination to strengthen the case against Gaonkar. The authorities are determined to crack down on cyber criminals who exploit unsecured Wi-Fi connections to commit offences in the state.
