Accident – Death – Obituary News : The death toll from the devastating landslides in Mizoram has tragically risen to 29, with the discovery of the body of a 34-year-old woman, Vanlalruali, in the Tlawng River in Kolasib district. Vanlalruali and her husband had been missing since being struck by a landslide in Aibawk village in Aizawl district on Tuesday.

The discovery of Vanlalruali’s body in the river in Hortoki village in Kolasib district, which shares a border with Assam, was a heartbreaking moment for her family. Her body was retrieved from the river and taken to Kawnpui, where her identity was confirmed by her grieving loved ones.

Efforts are currently underway to locate five other missing individuals, including four from Melthum, one of whom is just a six-month-old baby, as well as Vanlalruali’s husband. The landslides that struck Aizawl district on Tuesday claimed the lives of 21 locals and eight migrants from Jharkhand and Assam.

In response to this tragedy, Chief Minister Lalduhoma has announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 4 lakh each for the families of the deceased. Additionally, the government has allocated Rs 15 crore to address the aftermath of the disasters triggered by the heavy rainfall associated with Cyclone Remal.

The devastating impact of the landslides in Mizoram serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of communities to natural disasters, and the importance of prioritising disaster preparedness and response efforts.
