A Milwaukee man has been arrested and charged after allegedly driving a moped on the sidewalk and colliding with a police officer as he attempted to flee the scene on Saturday, May 25.

31-year-old Sebastian Cruz is facing charges, with prosecutors claiming he was also in possession of an open beer at the time of the incident.

According to a criminal complaint, law enforcement officials from the Milwaukee Police Department and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources were conducting a joint operation to combat the illegal use of ATVs, UTVs, and dirt bikes on city streets at approximately 7:45 p.m. that evening. Upon approaching the moped near the intersection of 12th and Mitchell, officers activated their squad car’s lights. However, the moped attempted to evade capture and ended up colliding with one of the officers as they were exiting the squad car, resulting in injury to the officer’s knee. The moped then proceeded to collide with the rear corner panel of the squad car in an attempt to escape.

The driver, later identified as Cruz, was apprehended at the scene. The complaint alleges that both Cruz and a passenger were found to have open containers of alcohol in their possession while riding the moped.

Cruz has been charged with the offence of fleeing/eluding an officer, which resulted in bodily harm.
