Accident – Death – Obituary News :

Authorities in Karnataka have taken action against the parents of a pregnant woman who tragically lost her life during an illegal abortion procedure. The incident, which has shocked the local community, took place in Mahalingpur town in Bagalkot district.

The individuals arrested in connection with the case are identified as Sanjay Gowli and Sangeetha Gowli, the parents of the deceased woman. The victim, Sonali, aged 33 and a resident of Sangli in Maharashtra, underwent the abortion in Mahalingpur after discovering that she was carrying a female foetus. This decision was allegedly influenced by her parents, as she already had two daughters.

Following Sonali’s untimely death on May 27, the Sangli Police in Maharashtra apprehended seven suspects, including the main perpetrator, nurse Kavitha Baddannavar, who conducted the illegal abortion. It was revealed that Sonali had undergone a gender confirmation scan in Maharashtra and paid a significant sum to Kavitha for the procedure.

Investigations and Previous Offences

The case has now been transferred to the Mahalingpur police station, where preliminary findings suggest a prior criminal record for Kavitha in 2022. The suspect, who worked as a housekeeping staff at a private hospital, was found to possess a scanning machine, prompting authorities to explore potential links to influential individuals involved in the illicit activities.

During a visit to Kavitha’s residence, Shashidhar Kosumbe, a member of the Children’s Welfare Committee, criticised the apparent oversight of District Health and Family Welfare Officer D.B. Pattanashetty. Kosumbe condemned the authorities’ negligence towards Kavitha’s activities and vowed to submit a comprehensive report to the government, alongside a formal complaint from the committee.

The tragic circumstances surrounding Sonali’s death underscore the urgent need for stricter enforcement of regulations against illegal abortions and female foeticide. The authorities are determined to bring all perpetrators to justice and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
