MARGAO: The disturbing trend of road accidents in South Goa shows no signs of slowing down, with recent incidents claiming the lives of innocent individuals. In a tragic car crash that occurred early Saturday morning on the Western Bypass at Nuvem, two Indian Navy lieutenants lost their lives, while another was left injured and admitted to Goa Medical College (GMC) in Bambolim.

The fatal accident took place when the car, driven by Aryan Prasher, 28, collided with a cement block on the side of the road. The deceased have been identified as Rudra Gosain, 29, and Arun Vir Singh, 26, while the driver, Aryan Prasher, sustained injuries.

Upon arrival at the accident scene, PSI Gaurav Naik and head constable Laxman Majik from the Maina-Curtorim police station conducted the necessary investigations. An offence has been registered against Aryan Prasher under Sections 279 (rash driving), 337 (causing hurt by an act endangering life or personal safety of others), and 304A (causing death by negligence) of the IPC. The authorities are set to record Aryan Prasher’s statement at GMC before proceeding with the arrest.

It was revealed by police sources that all three individuals involved in the accident were single and based in Karwar. They had embarked on a road trip to Goa from Karwar the previous evening, travelling to North Goa in a private Haryana-registered car. Tragically, the fatal accident occurred as they were returning to the Navy base at Karwar.

Following the necessary procedures, the car was taken to the Maina-Curtorim police station for RTO inspection. Navy officials from Karwar arrived in Margao later in the day, and the bodies of the deceased lieutenants are currently preserved at the South Goa District Hospital for autopsy, scheduled to take place on Sunday.

Local residents who gathered at the crash site expressed deep concern over the rising number of accidents in the area. Mingule Pereira, a resident, highlighted Nuvem as a notorious accident-prone location, with frequent mishaps reported on both the Western Bypass stretch and the NH 66 stretch running parallel to it. He urged authorities to conduct thorough inspections of such areas and implement preventive measures to curb accidents.

As of April this year, Maina-Curtorim police jurisdiction has recorded 60 accidents resulting in seven fatalities, compared to 70 accidents with five fatalities during the same period last year.
