Accident – Death – Obituary News :

MINNEAPOLIS — Authorities have revealed the identity of the man responsible for the fatal shooting of a police officer outside an apartment complex in south Minneapolis on Thursday. The incident occurred during a chaotic mass shooting that resulted in four individuals being injured and one civilian losing their life. The shooter has been identified as Mustafa Ahmed Mohamed.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that Mohamed was the third fatality at the scene earlier this week. Numerous police sources have informed WCCO that Mohamed was the individual who took the life of police officer Jamal Mitchell.

Officer Mitchell had responded to a shots-fired call at the apartment complex and had been assisting Mohamed when the latter turned on him and fired a fatal shot. Despite Mitchell falling to the ground, Mohamed continued to shoot at him. In response, officers at the scene returned fire, resulting in Mohamed’s demise. The medical examiner’s report indicated that Mohamed succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is currently conducting an investigation into the case but has yet to officially confirm the identity of the individual who fatally shot Officer Mitchell.

Mustafa Ahmed Mohamed, aged 35, had previously been convicted of first-degree burglary in 2007, rendering him ineligible to possess a firearm. Additionally, Mohamed had an outstanding warrant for his arrest following a 2022 incident where he was spotted at the scene of a robbery in downtown Minneapolis while carrying a gun. Court documents revealed that Mohamed attempted to conceal the weapon when law enforcement officers arrived, but he was eventually apprehended.

Tragically, a civilian identified as 32-year-old Osman Jimale was discovered deceased within the apartment. Another civilian inside the building sustained injuries, as did an individual sitting in a car outside. Furthermore, a Minneapolis officer and firefighter were also harmed during the incident.

Memorials have been set up outside the 5th Precinct in Minneapolis to honour Officer Mitchell, who had joined the police force in 2022 with the aim of improving community-police relations. Originally from Connecticut, Mitchell was a father of three and had been engaged to be married.

Community members gathered at the Apostle Supper Club in St. Paul for a fundraising barbecue event on Saturday, with all proceeds earmarked for Mitchell’s loved ones. Chef Brian Ingram and other prominent chefs were present to demonstrate their support for Mitchell’s family and law enforcement personnel.

Organisations such as the Police Officers Federation of Minneapolis, Law Enforcement Labor Services, and the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association are accepting donations through the LELS Benevolent Fund, with all funds directed towards supporting Officer Mitchell’s family.

Despite the outpouring of grief and support for the fallen officer, many are left questioning the motives behind the senseless act of violence that claimed his life.
