Accident – Death – Obituary News :

As nearly a quarter of a million individuals in Texas remain without power on Friday following severe storms earlier this week, the National Weather Service has issued warnings of ongoing heavy rain and high winds.

Utility company Oncor reported on its website that communities where restoration efforts are underway are being impacted by heavy rain, thunder, lightning, and flooding.

Severe thunderstorm watches were in effect on Friday morning in southeast Texas, where unfortunately a 16-year-old worker lost their life northeast of Magnolia. Other regions are also at risk of severe storms and flash flooding, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Josh Weiss.

Weiss noted that while the threat of tornadoes is minimal, it is not non-existent. Any tornadoes that do form are likely to be small in scale.

Meanwhile, in south Texas, high temperatures remain a concern, prompting the weather service to issue heat advisories for several areas including Corpus Christi, Laredo, and McAllen.

University Settles for $9M Over 2022 Deaths

In Charlottesville, Virginia, the University of Virginia has agreed to a $9 million settlement related to a tragic campus shooting in 2022 that claimed the lives of three football players and wounded two students.

According to Kimberly Wald, an attorney with the Miami-based Haggard Law firm representing some of the victims and their families, the university will provide $2 million each to the families of the three deceased students, which is the maximum allowable under Virginia law. The students who lost their lives were D’Sean Perry, Devin Chandler, and Lavel Davis Jr.

Furthermore, the university will allocate a total of $3 million to the two injured students, Mike Hollins and Marlee Morgan. The settlement was reached through negotiations outside of court and was recently approved by a judge in Albemarle County Circuit Court.

Christopher Jones Jr., a student and former football player, was identified as the perpetrator of the shooting, with his trial scheduled for January.

Stranded Climber Rescued from Denali

In Alaska, a climber from Malaysia who had been stranded near the summit of Denali, North America’s highest peak, for three days following a summit attempt was rescued on Friday. Tragically, his climbing partner did not survive the ordeal.

The surviving climber, along with his deceased partner, had been sheltering in a snow cave at an altitude of 19,600 feet since late Tuesday. The rescued climber was airlifted to an Anchorage hospital for further treatment.

Officials are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, with the climbers’ nationality confirmed as Malaysian. The deceased climber had passed away approximately two days prior to the rescue.

Ohio Senate Advances Plan for Biden to Appear on Ballot

In Ohio, a temporary solution allowing President Joe Biden to be included on the fall ballot was approved by the Senate on Friday during a special legislative session. The Republican-dominated legislature also passed a measure prohibiting foreign nationals, including lawful permanent residents (green card holders), from contributing to state ballot campaigns.

Although the special session was initially called by Governor Mike DeWine to address the timing of Ohio’s ballot deadline conflicting with the Democratic National Convention, the Senate’s inclusion of the foreign nationals prohibition led to a delayed decision. The Democratic National Committee is now working on a workaround to neutralize the necessity for an Ohio vote.

The committee is scheduled to vote on this alternative solution on Tuesday.
