A trooper with the Delaware State Police has been placed on administrative leave following an incident where a man was shot and wounded in New Castle. The shooting took place on Friday evening along Ferris Road, according to authorities.
The man involved has been identified as 36-year-old Jonathan Kreiser. Reports indicate that Kreiser was walking along the roadway, brandishing a gun and making threats towards others. When troopers arrived at the scene, Kreiser allegedly disregarded commands from the authorities and aimed the weapon at them.
State police have stated that one trooper opened fire in response to the threatening actions of Kreiser. The 36-year-old was subsequently treated for injuries that were deemed non-life-threatening and was later taken into custody.
Prior to the incident, Kreiser had been the subject of a Gold Alert earlier in the day due to concerns about his mental well-being. The alert was issued out of fear that he may have been contemplating suicide.
The Delaware State Police have begun an investigation into the shooting incident to determine the circumstances surrounding the use of force by the trooper. The trooper in question has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
