Accident – Death – Obituary News :

JOLIET, Ill. – Another individual has been apprehended in relation to the Joliet murder spree that resulted in the tragic deaths of eight individuals in January.

Jon Hansen, a 24-year-old resident of Shorewood, was taken into custody on Friday on three charges of murder, attempted first-degree murder, and aggravated battery with a firearm, as per the Will County Sheriff’s Office.

Hansen stands accused of being in the company of another suspect, identified as 23-year-old Romeo Nance, during both shooting incidents in the Joliet area. Additionally, he is alleged to have disposed of the firearm used in the crimes by discarding it in the DuPage River near his residence, according to deputies.

Overview of the Murder Spree

The first fatal shooting took place just prior to 4:30 p.m. on Jan. 21 at the Pheasant Run Apartments on Pheasant Run Road in Unincorporated Joliet Township.

Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered a 28-year-old male, identified as Toyosi Bakare from Joliet, with severe injuries – he had sustained a gunshot wound adjacent to his left eye.

Concurrently, deputies were informed of another shooting that had occurred shortly beforehand in the 200 block of Davis Street. The suspected perpetrator was believed to be on the move in a Red Toyota vehicle.

Bakare was rushed to St. Joseph Hospital in Joliet but succumbed to his injuries later on. Following an investigation, officials ruled out robbery as a motive for the crime, as money was found at the scene of the shooting.

Surveillance footage indicated that the suspect’s vehicle had entered and exited the Pheasant Run Apartments and was linked to both shooting incidents. Authorities stated that the two shootings “appeared to be random but connected.”

Hours later, the suspect’s vehicle was identified, bearing an Illinois license plate reading “Q73 0412.” The vehicle was believed to be associated with Nance, who had a substantial criminal record, according to the sheriff’s office.

On Jan. 22, detectives visited Nance’s residence in the 2200 block of West Acres to make contact with him, but received no response.

Upon noting blood on the exterior of the neighbouring house and bullet holes on its façade, detectives attempted to interact with the occupants. Subsequently, upon entering the premises, they discovered two deceased individuals.

As additional officers arrived at the scene, five more individuals were found dead inside the property. Seven of the victims were related to Nance and identified as:

  • Tameka Nance, 47, mother
  • Christine Esters, 38, aunt
  • William Esters II, 35, uncle
  • Joshua Nance, 31, brother
  • Alexandria Nance, 20, sister
  • 16-year-old female, sister
  • 14-year-old female, sister

Bakare was the eighth victim in Nance’s deadly crime spree.

Shortly before 6 p.m., the Will County Sheriff’s Office was alerted to Nance heading southbound in Texas. Two hours later, a helicopter spotted his vehicle on I-35.

Nance pulled into a gas station in Natalia, exited the vehicle with a firearm, and fled from law enforcement, allegedly fearing apprehension. Subsequently, he turned the gun on himself.

Further investigation confirmed that the weapon Nance used on himself was the same one used in Bakare’s murder.

Hansen was interrogated on Jan. 27, during which he acknowledged being with Nance on Jan. 21 from approximately 3:30 p.m., as per the Will County Sheriff’s Office.

He also confessed to being present during both shooting incidents. Hansen disclosed to detectives that the gun used in the shooting of Mario Guerrero on Davis Street was handed to him by Nance immediately following the incident, as stated by the WCSO.

Additionally, Hansen recounted being alongside Nance during the Pheasant Run shooting and relayed that the weapon used was a 9mm Glock Ghost Gun.

Deputies reported that Hansen admitted to discarding the firearm into the DuPage River close to his residence, providing no further details regarding its precise location.

A search operation was executed on Feb. 5 in the DuPage River, where a diver from the Plainfield Fire Department located the weapon by utilising a magnet along the riverbed.

An arrest warrant was issued for Hansen on May 31, following which he was apprehended without resistance. He is presently detained at the Will County Adult Detention Facility pending his initial court appearance.
