FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A disturbing case of animal abuse in Parlier, Fresno County, has resulted in the arrest of a man who tied up a dog in a backyard and shot it, according to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office.

On March 22, deputies responded to a residence on the 15000 block of E. Floral Ave. in Parlier after receiving a report of animal cruelty. The property owner informed authorities that an individual had tied a dog to a fence on his property and shot it with a 9mm handgun.

The injured dog was discovered by Sheriff’s Officials in a severely wounded state. Fortunately, the homeowner had security cameras installed on the property, capturing the entire incident of animal abuse. The footage was handed over to detectives for further investigation. The Fresno Humane Animal Services (FHAS) intervened by transporting the injured dog for emergency surgery, which proved successful in saving its life.

Following an extensive investigation, the suspect in this case was identified as 48-year-old Joe Ontiveros from Fresno. Ontiveros was already under custody at the Fresno County Jail for unrelated firearms charges, stemming from an arrest by the Parlier Police in April. Subsequently, additional charges of animal abuse were added to his criminal record.

The dog, having made a full recovery from its traumatic ordeal, is now seeking a loving home through adoption. Individuals interested in providing a forever home for the resilient canine can reach out to FHAS by visiting their facility at 1510 West Dan Ronquillo Drive in Fresno or by sending an email to info@fresnohumane.org.

For any information pertaining to the suspect or the case, the public is urged to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 559-600-3111.
