On the evening of May 27, just before 7 p.m., a concerned citizen reported to the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department (KCPD) that two male suspects had forcibly taken her blue 2010 GMC Terrain at gunpoint from the vicinity of East 24th Street and Highland Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri. This information was disclosed through a media release from the KBI.

Shortly after 8 p.m., the stolen SUV was sighted by KCPD in the 1500 block of Paseo, prompting a pursuit when the driver refused to pull over.

By around 8:10 p.m., the pursuit had crossed over into Kansas City, Kansas, where officers from KCKPD joined in the chase. The Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) and the Mission Police Department also lent their support to the operation.

At 8:17 p.m., a 21-year-old male passenger alighted from the stolen GMC and fled the scene in the vicinity of 18th and Steele. He was swiftly apprehended. At approximately 8:20 p.m., a KHP trooper executed a tactical vehicle intervention manoeuvre, causing the SUV to spin around and collide with a guard rail, effectively bringing the pursuit to a halt along U.S. Highway 69 and the 18th Street Expressway.

Initial reports suggest that upon the vehicle coming to a stop, the 41-year-old male driver, later identified as Burk, initiated gunfire from the SUV towards the responding officers. It is believed that two officers from KCKPD and five officers from KCPD returned fire. Burk sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was subsequently attended to by officers before being transported by EMS to a nearby hospital. Despite the medical team’s efforts, he was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Fortunately, no law enforcement officers sustained any injuries during the exchange of gunfire.
