On the evening of May 27, a citizen contacted the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department (KCPD) to report a carjacking incident involving two male suspects who allegedly stole her blue 2010 GMC Terrain at gunpoint in the vicinity of East 24th Street and Highland Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri. This information was disclosed in a media release by the KBI.

Shortly after 8 p.m., KCPD officers spotted the stolen vehicle in the 1500 block of Paseo, prompting a pursuit when the driver refused to pull over.

The chase crossed into Kansas City, Kansas, where officers from the KCKPD, the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP), and the Mission Police Department joined the pursuit.

During the pursuit, a 21-year-old male passenger exited the stolen GMC and attempted to flee in the area of 18th and Steele. He was swiftly apprehended by law enforcement. The pursuit eventually came to an end at U.S. Highway 69 and the 18th Street Expressway following a tactical vehicle intervention by a KHP trooper.

According to preliminary reports, once the stolen vehicle came to a stop, Burk, the 41-year-old driver, started firing rounds at the responding officers from inside the SUV. Two officers from KCKPD and five officers from KCPD returned fire, resulting in Burk being struck multiple times.

Law enforcement officers promptly provided medical assistance to Burk before he was transported to a local hospital by EMS. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Burk was pronounced dead at the hospital.
