Accident – Death – Obituary News :

The Plainville resident who has been accused of fatally shooting two high school students in Hartford in May reportedly shot one of them directly during a robbery attempt and the other as he attempted to flee the scene, as detailed in the arrest warrant affidavit.

James Chaney, 25, was taken into custody on Wednesday on charges of murder and first-degree reckless endangerment in connection with the tragic incident that claimed the lives of 19-year-old Lavante Brown and 16-year-old Aydin Davis, according to Lt. Aaron Boisvert of the Hartford Police Department.

Details of the Shooting

The warrant affidavit revealed that Brown, Davis, Chaney, and several others were present at a party in an apartment on Hendricxsen Avenue when Brown allegedly brandished a firearm in an attempt to rob Chaney and another individual.

According to the affidavit, Chaney responded by drawing his own weapon, leading to a brief standoff that culminated in gunfire from both sides. Brown was shot in the chest during the altercation and tragically succumbed to his injuries.

Davis, on the other hand, sustained gunshot wounds that were determined to have been inflicted from behind as he tried to escape. Investigators believe that Chaney pursued Davis and fired at him as he descended a flight of stairs. Shockingly, Davis was found to be unarmed.

School Affiliations of the Victims

Authorities confirmed that Brown attended Weaver High School while Davis was a student at the University High School of Science and Engineering.

Police Response and Investigation

Police were alerted to the shooting at 94 Hendricxsen Ave. following multiple reports of gunshots. Upon arrival, they discovered Brown and Davis lying unconscious with gunshot wounds at the entrance of the residence. A firearm was found near Brown, who was wearing a ski mask at the time.

Both victims were rushed to Hartford Hospital, where Brown was pronounced dead at 11:10 p.m. due to a gunshot wound to the chest. Davis succumbed to his injuries shortly after, having been shot multiple times in the torso and neck.

Law enforcement officials observed spent shell casings and blood droplets at the scene, leading them to the main living area where additional casings were located. A juvenile found unharmed in one of the bedrooms was later returned to his mother.

Witness Testimonies and Investigation Findings

Witnesses at the party provided crucial information, with one individual identifying Chaney as the person who engaged in the altercation with Brown and Davis. Detectives discovered that Chaney possessed a pistol permit and a registered 9mm pistol, with ballistics analysis confirming the use of two different firearms in the shooting.

Video footage from the apartment complex proved vital in identifying individuals leaving the scene after the incident. A witness recounted hearing gunfire and observing Brown and Davis lying motionless on the floor.

Chaney was apprehended by the U.S. Marshals Violent Fugitive Task Force and the Hartford Police Violent Crime Unit and appeared in Hartford Superior Court. His bail was initially set at $1 million but was later reduced to $750,000.

Chaney is scheduled to return to court on June 27 and has not entered a plea at this time.
