Accident – Death – Obituary News :
Following a tragic incident in Minneapolis, Officer Jamal Mitchell, who had been with the department for about a year-and-a-half, was killed in the line of duty. The shooting also claimed the life of a civilian, identified as Mustafa Ahmed Mohamed, 35. Additionally, another Minneapolis police officer was injured along with two other individuals.
Dispatch audio from the time of the incident revealed that officers were first dispatched around 5:20 p.m. to the 2200 block of Blaisdell Avenue South in the Whittier neighborhood following a report of a shooting.
According to Crime Watch, Mohamed is suspected to be the perpetrator of the mass shooting and police ambush that resulted in Officer Mitchell’s death. Reports indicate that Mohamed had a history of violent crime.
As officers arrived at the scene, they came under fire, with one officer reporting being fired upon. There were also reports of firefighters possibly being targeted upon their arrival, indicating an active shooter situation. Amidst the chaos, an officer was down, and there were multiple reports of additional potential victims.
Crime Watch reported that an apartment building at the location of the shooting was evacuated during the incident. Sources later revealed that Mohamed went to the south Minneapolis apartment with the intention of targeting two individuals known to him. Tragically, one of the individuals, identified as Osman Said Jimale, 32, lost their life in the altercation.
After the shooting, Mohamed attempted to flee the scene by trying to commandeer a moped at gunpoint. A brave motorist intervened, colliding with Mohamed to prevent his escape.
Officer Mitchell, who arrived at the scene alone, was working his mandated overtime shift at the time. Due to staffing shortages, Minneapolis officers are required to work overtime each month.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara paid tribute to Officer Mitchell, stating, “Jamal was engaged to be married. Jamal died a hero, and like police officers in Minneapolis standing behind me here and everywhere, he was one of the few who have the courage to stand up and answer the call every single day. He died doing what we asked him to do for the rest of us.”
A fundraiser has been launched to support Mitchell’s family during this difficult time.
