A man driving a stolen pickup truck led deputies on a high-speed chase from Phelan to Adelanto before being apprehended earlier this week, officials said.
The incident began when a deputy attempted to pull over a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck for traffic violations around 12:30 a.m. on Thursday at the intersection of Colorado and Palmdale roads in Phelan, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.
The driver, later identified as 53-year-old Hymie Torres of Adelanto, refused to comply with the deputy’s orders, initiating a pursuit through the streets of the two towns.
According to the sheriff’s department, Torres exhibited “complete disregard for public safety” during the chase, speeding through intersections without stopping and driving on the wrong side of the road.
After a tense pursuit, Torres eventually abandoned the stolen truck along Koala Road and attempted to flee on foot. However, with the assistance of a sheriff’s helicopter, he was quickly located hiding nearby and taken into custody.
Authorities later confirmed that the truck had been reported stolen in Adelanto the previous month, linking Torres to the theft.
Following his arrest, Torres was booked on suspicion of possession of a stolen vehicle, as indicated by county booking records. Bail has been set at £30,000 pending further legal proceedings.
