FINKSBURG, Md. — Maryland State Police are currently investigating a tragic fatal crash that occurred on Friday night in Carroll County.

According to authorities, the incident took place just before 11:30 PM when a 2022 Ford Explorer was travelling north on Emory Road at Cedarhurst Road.

Investigators suspect that at a certain point, the driver failed to adhere to a closed construction zone at the North Branch Patapsco River bridge replacement project, leading to a collision with a 2014 Volvo excavator and a nearby Mack dump truck.

It has been confirmed that the construction zone was not active at the time of the crash. The driver of the Ford, identified as 41-year-old Geoffrey Brittingham from Hampstead, sadly lost his life at the scene.

Furthermore, it was disclosed that Brittingham’s 7-year-old son, who was seated in the back of the vehicle, sustained injuries in the accident. He was promptly transported to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore for medical care.

No additional injuries were reported at the scene. Authorities have advised that the MD-91 bridge will remain closed for an extended period, and suggest alternative routes such as MD-30 and MD-140 for drivers.

The ongoing investigation is being led by the Maryland State Police Crash Team.
