PRINCESS ANNE, MD – Maryland State Police investigators are currently conducting a thorough investigation into the tragic death of a state prison inmate in Somerset County.

Authorities have identified the deceased inmate as 49-year-old Eugene Stanford, who was pronounced dead by emergency medical services personnel. Stanford was serving time at the Eastern Correctional Institution in Princess Anne.

According to Maryland State Police, a suspect, also an inmate, has been identified in connection with Stanford’s death. However, no charges have been filed against the suspect at this time. Officials have chosen not to disclose the suspect’s identity until formal charges are brought forth.

The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit was alerted to the situation at 12:45pm on Saturday, June 1st, by the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Internal Investigative Unit. The report indicated that Eugene Stanford’s autopsy revealed evidence of “foul play”, leading the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to rule his death as a homicide.

State Police Homicide Investigators are diligently pursuing leads and gathering evidence to shed light on the circumstances surrounding Stanford’s untimely demise. Once the investigation is concluded, findings will be presented to the Somerset County State’s Attorney Office for further evaluation and potential charges.
