A tragic crash in Scioto County that claimed the lives of three young children last week has now resulted in the death of a fourth person, as reported by our news partners at WBNS-10 TV.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol received a distressing call about a two-vehicle collision on State Route 104 in Morgan Township on May 24. The driver, Gage Smith, 22, from Piketon, was heading northbound on SR 104 when the incident occurred.
According to OSHP, Smith lost control of his vehicle after passing another vehicle in the northbound lane. This led to him crossing into the opposite lane and colliding with a southbound vehicle.
Tragically, three young children who were passengers in Smith’s vehicle lost their lives in the crash. They have been identified as 4-year-old Navy Copas, 6-year-old Madison Copas, and 5-year-old Xavier Smith.
Following the crash, a 28-year-old woman named Courtney Copas, also from Piketon, was rushed to Grant Medical Center with severe injuries. Sadly, on May 31, it was confirmed that she succumbed to her injuries.
Smith, the driver of one of the vehicles involved, was treated for his injuries at a local hospital before being taken into custody at Scioto County Jail. OSHP has indicated that Smith was suspected of being under the influence of drugs at the time of the crash, with impairment believed to be a contributing factor.
Smith now faces charges of three counts of aggravated vehicular homicide and one count of aggravated vehicular assault. It remains to be seen whether these charges will be altered in light of Courtney Copas’ tragic passing.
