(BIVN) – The body discovered last week in a vacant lot in a Puna subdivision has been identified as 38-year-old Ashley Michelle Kuregian, who was reported missing on May 21st.

Hawaiʻi Island police have confirmed that the man who reported Kuregian missing, her boyfriend 38-year-old Matthew Adrian Poole, was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on May 24th at a residence in Hawaiian Paradise Park. The tragic incident unfolded as police arrived at the location, leading to the activation of the Special Response Team and Crisis Negotiation Team in the Puna subdivision.

Investigation into Murder-Suicide

Authorities are now treating the missing person case as a murder-suicide, with details emerging about the events leading up to the tragic discovery. On Thursday afternoon, May 23, 2024, members of the Area I Criminal Investigation Division executed a search warrant at a residence in Kea’au, Hawai’i, related to the ongoing missing person investigation involving Kuregian.

Kuregian was reported missing by Poole on May 21st, with no sightings of her for approximately a week prior to the report. Upon police arrival at the residence, a gunshot was heard from inside the property, prompting the secure perimeter and activation of specialized police teams.

Police Response and Discovery

Following the incident, authorities discovered Poole’s body with a fatal self-inflicted gunshot wound inside the residence. A firearm was also recovered at the scene. During the search, police found information that led them to search for Kuregian’s body in the Orchidland Estates Subdivision.

Later that evening, on May 23rd, investigators located human remains in an advanced state of decomposition on a vacant property in Kea’au. The remains were recovered the following day, and an autopsy was conducted to determine the cause of death. Further forensic examinations were scheduled to provide additional insights into the case.

Identification and Investigation

Subsequent examinations confirmed Kuregian’s identity and revealed that she died from a single gunshot wound to the head, with the manner of death classified as a homicide. The Area I Criminal Investigation Division continues to investigate the case, urging anyone with information to come forward.
