Accident – Death – Obituary News :
On the evening of Wednesday, 29th May, a recovery operation was carried out near the Coves Campground at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore following a distressing incident involving a 45-year-old male.
According to reports received by United States Park Rangers, the individual, later identified as Steven Poppema from Holland, Michigan, had collapsed while hiking towards Spray Falls and was in a state of unconsciousness. The Alger County Sheriff’s Office swiftly responded by deploying a marine vessel to the area, with additional personnel also arriving on foot to assist in the operation.
Tragically, despite the efforts of the responders, Steven Poppema was pronounced dead at the scene. Park Superintendent David Horne expressed his condolences, stating, “We extend our sincere sympathies to the family of Steven Poppema during this difficult time. We are grateful for the support and collaboration of our agency partners in managing this incident.”
