A heartbreaking incident occurred at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore on Wednesday evening, resulting in the untimely death of a 45-year-old man from Holland.
U.S. Park Rangers were alerted to the situation when they received a distress call reporting that the man had collapsed while hiking towards Spray Falls. The victim, identified as Steven Poppema, displayed signs of distress and was in urgent need of assistance.
In response to the emergency, personnel from the Alger County Sheriff’s Office promptly arrived at the scene in a marine response boat. Tragically, they recovered Poppema’s lifeless body, and he was pronounced dead on-site.
Expressing his condolences, Park Superintendent David Horne conveyed his sympathies to Poppema’s family. He also expressed gratitude towards the agency partners who aided in the swift response to the tragic incident.
