Accident – Death – Obituary News : MEDIA COURTHOUSE — A Yeadon resident was handed a lengthy prison sentence of 22 to 50 years on Wednesday after admitting to the brutal murder of his father over five years ago.

Robert Coult III, aged 35, pleaded guilty to third-degree murder and possession of a weapon with intent before Common Pleas Court Judge Richard Cappelli. The charges of first-degree murder, abuse of a corpse, and tampering with evidence were dismissed as part of a plea deal negotiated by First Assistant District Attorney Tanner Rouse and defense attorney Stephen Deavor.

The grisly incident took place on September 15, 2018, when Coult beat and stabbed his father, 59-year-old Robert Coult Jr., in their Yeadon home on West Providence Road. Following a confrontation where the victim accused his son of theft and pushed him down the stairs, Coult struck his father repeatedly with a hammer before fatally stabbing him.

In a detailed confession to authorities, Coult described how he then attempted to dismember the body and disposed of it in Lower Merion. He meticulously wrapped the victim’s head in a towel, placed a plastic bag over it, and tried to cut the body with a saw tool. The gruesome crime scene was discovered by police, leading to Coult’s arrest.

The victim’s body was found on the side of the road in Gladwyne, prompting an investigation that eventually linked the remains to Robert Coult Jr. through identification provided by his girlfriend. Coult III cooperated with authorities during the search of the property and vehicles, leading to the recovery of incriminating evidence.

The sentencing hearing saw emotional statements from the victim’s girlfriend, who described the impact of the loss on her life, including a stroke she suffered shortly after the incident. She shared memories of her adventurous and community-minded partner, expressing disappointment in Coult III’s delayed admission of guilt.

Despite receiving a letter from Coult III months later, the girlfriend found his words manipulative and chose to pass it on to investigators. In her address to the court, she referenced the biblical principle of “an eye for an eye” and expressed hope that the sentence would provide a measure of justice for the harm inflicted on her late partner.

The lengthy legal process that followed the murder included multiple court appearances and delays, culminating in Coult III’s sentencing this week. The resolution of the case brought some closure to the victim’s family and loved ones, who continue to mourn his loss and remember his positive impact on their lives..
