2. Search Continues S.C. National Guard Sergeant.
Accident – Death – Obituary News :
“It’s been a whole lot to take in,” said Amicka Griffin, the mother of National Guard Staff Sgt. Porsha Griffin, who went missing while tubing at Lake Greenwood over Memorial Day weekend. Authorities in South Carolina are continuing their search for Griffin, who was tubing behind a boat without a life jacket on May 25 and didn’t resurface, according to reports from NBC affiliate WYFF, Fox affiliate WHNS, and CW affiliate WIS.
The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) posted on X (formerly known as Twitter) that authorities responded to the incident and divers were dispatched to search for Griffin. Griffin had been tubing with three other individuals, who were confirmed to be safe by authorities.
As the search for Griffin continues, the SCDNR provided an update on May 31, stating that officers, investigators, and divers are conducting surface searches, using side scan sonar and dives. The department also mentioned that recovery efforts began on Saturday afternoon and that their priority is to bring closure to Griffin’s family.
Griffin’s commander, Col. Linda Riedel, expressed deep sadness on behalf of the South Carolina National Guard. “We’ll continue to pray the search for her yields answers for all who care about her, as well as for peace for her daughter and extended family,” Riedel said in a statement obtained by WIS.
Amicka Griffin, Porsha’s mother, spoke to WHNS about the shock of hearing her daughter was missing. “It’s been a whole lot to take in,” she said. Porsha, a mother to a 9-year-old girl, recently earned her nursing degree in December and was described by her mother as a supportive person who could be relied upon for anything.
Authorities from the SCDNR and the South Carolina National Guard have not responded to requests for comments from PEOPLE.
