A climber from Malaysia found himself stranded near the summit of Denali, North America’s tallest mountain, for three days after a summit push. Unfortunately, his partner did not survive the ordeal. The third member of their team had already been rescued earlier in the week after descending to a lower altitude on the mountain.
Despite challenging weather conditions, personnel from Denali National Park and Preserve managed to rescue the surviving climber at 19,600 feet (5,974 meters) on Friday morning. The two climbers had been holed up in a snow cave since late Tuesday. The park’s high-altitude helicopter pilot had dropped a bag with survival gear near the snow cave the previous day and spotted a climber waving at him, but strong winds prevented a rescue at that time.
Due to limited communications with the climbers, it was unclear to rescuers whether one or both climbers were alive until the successful rescue on Friday morning. The language barrier has also posed challenges as the climbers are from Malaysia.
“All we know right now is that the deceased climber passed away approximately two days ago,” said park spokesperson Paul Ollig. The rescued climber was airlifted to an Anchorage hospital for further treatment and was surprisingly in strong condition, even walking on his own.
Rangers are now working on recovering the body of the deceased climber. The three climbers were experienced in scaling high elevation peaks internationally, with two of them having prior experience on Denali.
The third climber, a 48-year-old, was rescued earlier in the week after descending to a camp at 17,200 feet (5,243 meters). He was suffering from severe frostbite and hypothermia at the time of his rescue.
