CHANDLER, AZ (AZFamily) — The Chandler Police Department has released edited videos that depict officers shooting an armed man and a neighbor who they mistakenly believed was the armed suspect.
The body-camera and home surveillance footage were captured during an incident on March 3 on Carla Vista Drive, just north of Chandler Boulevard and east of McClintock Drive, around 6:30 p.m.
Authorities were alerted to the neighbourhood following 911 calls reporting a man, identified as 58-year-old Luciano Gutierrez, behaving erratically and claiming there were bodies inside his residence.
According to reports, Gutierrez was armed, and a gunshot was heard in the vicinity.
Upon arrival, officers cordoned off the west side of Carla Vista Drive at Los Feliz Drive.
Officers attempted to communicate with Gutierrez using their PA system, instructing him to exit the residence with his hands up.
After a few minutes of negotiation, Gutierrez emerged from his house and aimed his gun at the officers present.
In response, the officers fired multiple rounds at Gutierrez, who was subsequently taken into custody on multiple felony charges.
Meanwhile, a neighbouring 33-year-old man, who was mistaken for the suspect, was shot by officers after allegedly failing to comply with their commands.
The police later determined that the neighbour was unarmed, and both individuals were hospitalised but survived the ordeal.
The footage also captures a subsequent incident in the same neighbourhood, where officers fatally shot a man armed with knives who charged at them two months later.
