A woman living in Yellowknife has been identified as a U.S. fugitive wanted in connection with a fatal drunk driving incident in Scottsdale, Arizona, according to police reports.

Gloria Schulze, who went by the name Kate Dooley in Yellowknife, faced charges after colliding with a vehicle driven by 21-year-old Angela Maher, who was fatally injured while visiting the city. Investigations revealed that Dooley had consumed alcohol and marijuana on the night of the accident.

Tragically, Maher succumbed to her injuries.

Dooley, who passed away in 2019, was charged with manslaughter and three counts of endangerment but absconded while awaiting trial.

It remains uncertain when Dooley arrived in Yellowknife, as per investigators.

A close friend of Dooley mentioned in an obituary article on My True North Now that she had relocated to Yellowknife in the early 1990s.

The case was tried in absentia in 2001, resulting in Dooley being convicted on all charges. In 2014, the case was reassigned to a detective in the criminal investigations unit.

Sgt. Allison Sempsis, the public information sergeant for the Scottsdale police department, informed CBC that the search for Dooley never ceased.

“Throughout the years, we received sporadic tips, but none of them led to anything substantial,” she stated.

In 2020, the case was assigned to another Scottsdale police detective, who contacted Dooley’s brother. He had received an anonymous call informing him of her demise due to cancer in Yellowknife in 2019.

Through various open-source search engines, investigators stumbled upon an article about a tribute event for a woman named Kate Dooley, who had passed away from cancer on December 1, 2019.

The article also featured a photo of Dooley, bearing a striking resemblance to an age-progressed photo of Schulze.

It was discovered that the Dooley in question had been arrested in Yellowknife in 2009 for driving under the influence, with her fingerprints still on record with the RCMP.

Following analysis by Scottsdale’s crime lab, the FBI, and Interpol, a match was confirmed.

Authorities are currently in talks with Dooley’s acquaintances to unravel more details about her past.

According to Sempsis, detectives have interviewed two of Dooley’s friends in Yellowknife, who were unaware of her true identity.

Dooley’s Enigmatic Persona

After her demise, Dooley’s friends stumbled upon books in her possession detailing how to alter one’s identity. Additionally, they found other peculiar items among her belongings, although specifics were not disclosed.

Known for being a private individual, Dooley was recognised for her work at mining camps and as a house painter.

Friend Kim Smale expressed shock upon learning about Dooley’s past life in the U.S. and her involvement in a fatal drunk driving accident, stating, “This revelation was unexpected for all of us who knew her. She kept her personal life incredibly private.”

Dooley gained fame in Yellowknife as a pyrotechnics expert due to her extensive involvement in local fireworks displays.

The Schulze case has garnered significant attention online and has been featured on television programmes like America’s Most Wanted and Unsolved Mysteries.

Despite ongoing investigations, Dooley’s family maintains ignorance about her whereabouts.

Authorities in Scottsdale continue to collaborate with Yellowknife RCMP in their probe.
