Accident – Death – Obituary News : In the Ashoknagar district of Madhya Pradesh, a shocking incident unfolded as a 22-year-old man attempted to kidnap a woman he had previously raped upon learning of her upcoming marriage to another man. The perpetrator, identified as Kalu, had recorded a video of the woman and used it to threaten her family, warning them against allowing her to marry someone else. When he discovered that her marriage was imminent, he, along with three accomplices, went to her home and viciously assaulted her entire family.

In a brazen daylight attack, Kalu tied the woman’s hands and tried to abduct her, brandishing a sword in the disturbing video footage that has now gone viral on social media. Fortunately, neighbours intervened and managed to rescue the woman, while the perpetrators fled the scene.

Following the incident, FIRs were filed against the three individuals under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 376 (Rape), 363 (attempt to kidnap), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 294 (using obscene language), and 506 (criminal intimidation).

This harrowing case highlights a disturbing trend of possessiveness and entitlement towards women, where men believe they have ownership over them. Despite stringent laws in place to protect women, there are still glaring gaps in the legal and institutional framework in India that perpetuate a culture of impunity for perpetrators of gender-based violence.

We spoke to legal expert Siddharth Chandrashekhar, Advocate and Legal Counsel at the Bombay High Court, who shed light on the factors contributing to this mindset. He pointed out delays in the judicial process, apathy within investigating authorities, and societal pressures on victims to remain silent or withdraw complaints as key issues. Additionally, the release of perpetrators on bail, including those who have obtained anticipatory bail, only serves to embolden them to commit further crimes.

Despite our collective belief in the justice system, the prevalence of crimes against women and the lack of meaningful change in attitudes towards gender-based violence raise questions about the effectiveness of current approaches. Perhaps a focus on empathy, respect, and consent in educational initiatives could help shift societal norms and prevent such heinous acts in the future.

As we grapple with the alarming frequency of violence against women, it is essential to address the root causes of such behaviour and work towards creating a safer and more equitable society for all. The incident in Ashoknagar serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for systemic change to protect and empower women in India..
