JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – A suspect involved in a recent carjacking incident, where a family was traumatized outside their home, has been apprehended by Jackson police. Detective Tommie Brown confirmed that the 14-year-old suspect, identified as Jamontae Latrell Kelly, was brought to the Copiah County Sheriff’s Office by his parents on Wednesday, May 29, following media coverage of the incident. The teenager was then transported to the Jackson Police Department (JPD).

Kelly has been charged with armed carjacking and six counts of aggravated assault. His bond was set at $1.75 million on Thursday. The carjacking took place on Friday, May 24, in the 3700 block of Jayne Avenue, as reported by Brown.

One of the victims, Heather Allen, narrated the harrowing experience to WJTV 12 news. She mentioned that the family was en route to North Mississippi to visit relatives when two suspects approached their vehicle and brandished a gun. The suspects demanded the car keys and forcibly removed Allen’s daughter from the vehicle.

Following the carjacking, the family’s vehicle was discovered on a nearby street approximately 40 minutes later. Although no injuries were sustained by the children and grandchildren, Allen expressed her gratitude for their safety. However, she revealed plans to relocate in light of the traumatic incident.

An online fundraiser has been set up to assist the family in recovering from the ordeal. The GoFundMe page aims to provide support to the affected family members.

While one suspect is in custody, Jackson police are still actively seeking the second suspect. Individuals with relevant information are urged to contact JPD at 601-960-1234 or Crime Stoppers at 601-355-TIPS (8477).
