LAKELAND, Fla. – A resident of Plant City, Florida is now facing multiple charges after allegedly leading police on a high-speed chase that resulted in a fatal multi-vehicle crash in Lakeland. The incident left one person dead and several others injured.
Plant City Police Department Captain Alfred Van Duyne revealed that the authorities received a distress call around 9:35 a.m. on Thursday reporting a possible abduction of a woman inside a vehicle. Dispatchers also mentioned a potential stabbing incident during the call.
Following the call, law enforcement managed to track down the suspect, identified as 50-year-old James Edward Gougeon III, using cell phone signals. Despite attempts to pull him over, Gougeon refused to stop and initiated a dangerous pursuit.
The chase spanned several streets in Plant City before Gougeon entered the eastbound lanes of Interstate 4. Police eventually discontinued the pursuit on the interstate, but located the suspect’s vehicle in Lakeland shortly after.
Authorities resumed the chase in Lakeland, during which the female passenger managed to escape from the vehicle. However, Gougeon continued driving and eventually collided at the intersection of Frontage Road and Harden Boulevard, near Polk Parkway.
According to reports from the Lakeland Police Department, the crash involved a total of 11 individuals across eight different vehicles. Gougeon allegedly ran a red light and collided with a Ford SUV, causing a chain reaction crash involving several other vehicles.
Following the initial impact, Gougeon’s vehicle struck a raised concrete median before crashing into another Ford SUV, leading to further collisions involving additional vehicles. Tragically, the driver of one of the Ford SUVs succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
James Edward Gougeon III attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended by authorities from Plant City and Lakeland. Both Gougeon and a passenger from one of the vehicles involved in the crash sustained minor injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Gougeon now faces charges including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, kidnapping during the commission of a felony, tampering with a witness, and multiple traffic violations related to the incident in Plant City. Additional charges of fleeing to elude with reckless high speed, driving on a suspended license, and leaving the scene of a crash have been filed in connection with the events in Lakeland.
The roadway remained closed for approximately 7 ½ hours as authorities conducted their investigations into the tragic incident.
