Accident – Death – Obituary News : The Newton Police Department has provided an update on a tragic incident involving an officer-involved shooting that resulted in the fatality of 33-year-old Jamar Franklin Robinson of Newton. The incident took place in the early hours of Tuesday morning (May 28), with the initial victim identified as 38-year-old Heather Renee Clanton of Taylorsville.
At approximately 12:35 a.m. on Tuesday, Catawba County Communications received a distressing call from Ms. Clanton, reporting that she had been shot in the parking lot of the Catawba County Government Center. After fleeing the scene, she was later discovered in the Planet Fitness parking lot on Northwest Boulevard. As emergency personnel attended to Ms. Clanton, Robinson arrived on the scene and opened fire on them.
In response to the imminent threat, officers returned fire, ultimately striking Robinson. Both Robinson and Ms. Clanton sustained multiple gunshot wounds and were swiftly airlifted to a hospital in Charlotte. While Ms. Clanton remains in stable condition, Robinson tragically succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. The Newton Police Department has confirmed that there was a prior acquaintance between the victim and the suspect.
The original news release from the Newton Police Department indicated that multiple officers were present at the scene when Robinson was shot. However, in a subsequent update released on Thursday (May 30), it was disclosed that three officers and one deputy discharged their firearms. This group included two officers from the Newton Police Department, one from the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office, and one from the Conover Police Department.
Fortunately, there were no injuries reported among the first responders on site, and all officers and the deputy involved are currently on administrative leave pending the outcomes of both the SBI investigation and internal reviews within their respective departments. The identities of the officers and deputy involved in the shooting have been withheld at this time.
